About Dayton Raiders Swim Academy

Building Strong Swimmers from the Bottom to the Top

The Dayton Raiders Swim Academy was founded in 2016 to build upon the long-standing tradition of the Dayton Raiders Swim Team: teaching swimmers to swim the right way, from the bottom to the top.

Our program is built around developing a strong foundation of water safety, body position, and fundamental swimming skills. As swimmers progress, we build on those fundamentals to develop proper stroke technique, endurance, confidence, and a lifelong love of swimming.

Our Mission

Our goal is to provide a safe, positive, and encouraging learning environment where children can thrive in and around the water.

Our highly trained instructors use demonstrations, drills, and individual feedback to help each swimmer develop skills at their own pace. We focus on teaching proper technique from the beginning so that swimmers develop good habits as they progress through the program.

Our Swim Lesson Levels

Our progressive level system allows swimmers to build their skills one step at a time.

Level 1 — Water Comfort & Air Exchange

We begin with the basics of becoming comfortable in the water. Swimmers learn air exchange, going underwater, and foundational water skills.

Level 2 — Floating & Gliding

Swimmers learn to float and glide on their front and back while maintaining proper body position. Establishing a strong body position is an important foundation for every swimming stroke.

Level 3 — Adding the Kick

Once swimmers have developed proper body position and can glide, we introduce the kick on both the front and back.

Level 4 — Freestyle

Swimmers begin putting the pieces together by introducing the arms into the freestyle stroke and developing proper stroke mechanics.

Level 5 — Breathing & Backstroke

Swimmers continue developing freestyle while learning side breathing. We also introduce and develop proper backstroke technique.

Level 6 — Endurance & Water Skills

Swimmers build freestyle and backstroke endurance while continuing to refine their technique. We also introduce important skills including diving and treading water.

Stroke School — Developing All Four Strokes

Stroke School is the next step in a swimmer's development. Swimmers continue to improve their freestyle and backstroke while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly.

The goal is to develop well-rounded swimmers who are comfortable, confident, and technically sound in the water.

Once a swimmer successfully completes Stroke School, they become eligible to move on to the Dayton Raiders Swim Team.

Our Pools

Our lesson environment is designed to provide swimmers with the appropriate setting as they progress through the program.

Levels 1–3:
Lessons take place in our dedicated lesson pool, which is approximately
2.5 feet deep and maintained at 86°F. The warm, shallow water provides a comfortable environment for swimmers who are developing their foundational skills.

Levels 4 and above:
As swimmers become more advanced, lessons move into our competition pool, ranging from
4 to 12 feet deep and maintained at approximately 80°F. This allows swimmers to develop more advanced skills, including diving, treading water, endurance, and full-stroke swimming.

Swimming the Right Way from the Start

At Dayton Raiders Swim Academy, we believe that learning to swim is about more than simply getting across the pool. We want swimmers to understand how their bodies move through the water and develop the proper skills and technique that will stay with them as they advance.

From a child's first time putting their face in the water to preparing for the swim team, our goal is the same:

Build a strong foundation. Develop proper technique. Create confident, capable swimmers.
