Suzie Retterer-Helfrich has over thirty years in the swimming business which she started as a summer competitive swimmer and lifeguard in Marysville, Ohio. Competitively, she gravitated toward available sports as there were no year-round swim teams with which to compete in that area.  She initially was an avid tennis player, the last female cut from a national level team at The Ohio State University, but then as a racquetball player excelling to the State Open Champion in 1980, qualifying twice for the national team and then as a professional on the national tour.  In an effort to pay the bills, Suzie was a physical education teacher and coach for six years, having graduated from OSU with a BS in education and an MA in Sports Administration.  Since that time, she has served five years as an elementary principal, ten years as a high school assistant or principal and three years as an instructor of Child Development at OSU while doing her doctoral work in Educational Administration.  During one stint at OSU she was in charge of aquatics there and has spent almost every summer in pool management and coaching with fourteen years as a year round USA Age Group coach with Buckeye Swim Club and Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio for which she now coaches.  With organizational development as a strong area of involvement, Suzie was a founding part of the NEW Swim League in Central Ohio, both Marysville Summer Swim Team and Marysville High School Swim Team and Olenangy High School Swim Team.  She was named OCC Coach of the Year in 2000 for her league winning Olentangy Girls Team.  On the side, or actually on the forefront, she is the co-coach along with her husband Hap of "Team Helfrich" comprised of  four daughters ranging from OSU Swim Team member, Rachel(20)  to Marysville High School swimmer Sarah(16) to Zone/Quad/AA level swimmers, Katie (soon 12) and Maggie (soon 11).
