Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women’s swimming team moved closer to qualifying more individuals and relays for the NCAA Championships at the Indiana Open on Saturday afternoon. The Hoosiers earned seven NCAA provisional cut times on the day, while also setting a pair of school records.

An NCAA provisional cut time means an individual or relay will be considered to compete at the NCAA Championships. An NCAA ‘A’ cut automatically qualifies an individual or relay for the Championships. If the number of NCAA automatic times do not fill the field, then the next best NCAA ‘B’ or provisional cuts are invited to fill the field. Also an individual with an NCAA automatic cut is allowed to compete in any event in which they have an NCAA provisional cut time.

The Hoosiers’ 200-yard medley relay, which was disqualified at the Big Ten Championships, responded at the Indiana Open by eclipsing the school record. The team of freshman Leila Vaziri, senior Greer McGettrick, junior Erin Smith and senior Meghan Medendorp went 1:41.84, which was sixth-hundredths faster than the school record set in 2002. The time was also an NCAA provisional cut time.

After having two swimmers make NCAA provisional cuts in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle during the first session of the Open, the Hoosiers improved those times during the second session. In the first session of the event, the competitors swam in yards and after a 30 minute break to change the pool, the competitors swam the second session in short course meters.

In the 200-meter freestyle, both freshman Clarissa Wentworth and sophomore Doherty Colgin went faster than the school record mark. Both Hoosiers also improved upon their ‘B’ cut times from the yards session of the Open. Wentworth went a school record 1:47.91 converted time during the meters session. The times from the second session were converted back to yards for school record marks. Colgin put the pressure on her teammate as she finished an eyelash back at 1:47.99 converted. The times were both high NCAA provisional cuts only three-tenths short of the NCAA automatic cut time.

Sophomores Lauren Lubus and Sarah Bugden both earned high provisional cut times in the 200-meter butterfly. Like the 200 freestyle, both girls improved upon their ‘B’ cut times from the first session. Lubus went a season-best converted time of 1:58.63 in the meter session, while Budgen was right behind her teammate at 1:59.09 converted. The time for Bugden was a career best and the third fastest in school history.

Smith and McGettrick each earned NCAA provisional cut time during the first session. Smith went a career best of 51.22 in the 100-yard freestyle, while McGettrick went 1:03.60 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Smith’s time was not only a provisional cut time, but the ninth-fastest in school history.

The Hoosiers will have three weeks off before the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. The Championships will be Thursday, March 18 through Saturday, March 20. Prelims for the Championships will be at 11:00 a.m. followed by finals at 6:00 p.m.
